My EPQ explored the topic of 3d printing, with the title "To build a ‘high performance and cost-effective’ Ultimaker Original Plus (UMO+) 3D Printer from scratch and evaluate it against the commercially available assembly kit, in the context of the RepRap initiative.”
I set out with the aim of producing a custom-built operational machine, for as low a cost as was feasible without sacrificing quality. To achieve this I manufactured as many components myself as was functionally possible, as well as meticulously combing the internet for affordable wholesalers and suppliers for the rest of the hardware.
Once all parts were ordered and customs tariffs had been paid, the final cost for the components amounted to £537.05. I successfully manufactured 180 components out of a total of 662 required for the build, making up a significant 27% share. I constructed the printer at home during a half term break spread over a handful of intensive sessions, with a total duration of 36 hours.
I achieved an A* in my EPQ with this project, for my artefact, detailed report, production log and presentation.
