For my GCSE Product Design project I explored the problem of 'light poverty' in the prescribed context of 'a product that supports developing countries'. Poor access to light stems from unreliable energy grids and lack of affordable technologies, which impacts communities in numerous ways including negatively affecting; health and safety, education and productivity.
In response to this issue I have developed a versatile, Multi-Purpose Portable Lamp branded the 'SUNlight'. It is a compact lamp primarily serving as a dual function room and/or desk light, in addition to device charging as a power bank. Featuring two independent light sources -- a bright top LED and a ring of LEDs on the base -- the lamp effectively illuminates a space or a surface. These lights can be used together or separately, and are controlled by a single button for ease of use. The desk mode is facilitated by an innovative folding leg tripod while a hanging strap allows for ceiling suspension. It was imperative that this product would provide users with a sustainable source of light so an accompanying solar panel would be provided. Furthermore, the construction is simple and modular, enabling accessible maintenance and disassembly without the use of tools.
